61. Our Lady of Victory and Help From Heaven in the Hour of Assault

Devotional Treasury: Sacred Heart, Holy Ghost, Sorrows, Holy Face, Precious Blood.

"Thou art terrible as an army set in array." - Canticles 6:3

Many readers know the title Our Lady of Victory or Our Lady of the Rosary, but may not know why kept such a feast. She kept it because Catholic memory is not ashamed to say that heaven aids the faithful in public conflict, and that Marian help belongs not only to private comfort but to the defense of Christendom.^2^3^4

The Roman feast line remembers the victory associated with Lepanto, when Christian forces faced grave danger and answered not with confidence in arms alone, but with public prayer and appeal for heavenly help. After the victory, Catholic memory did not speak as if men alone had saved themselves. It gave thanks to God and honored the intercession of Our Lady in the hour of assault.^2^3^4

So the feast line taught the faithful to remember an actual deliverance. Christian fleets were threatened, Christendom was under pressure, the Rosary was urged publicly, and thanksgiving was rendered publicly afterward. did not blush to say that heaven had helped her children in history.

It does not turn history into myth. It teaches that the Mother of God is not irrelevant when the public order of Christian life is under assault, and that is right to remember help received in battle with gratitude rather than embarrassment.

The present crisis tempts Catholics to privatize victory. Our Lady of Victory resists that narrowing. She teaches that Mary's maternal help belongs to households, souls, and nations; to hidden fidelity and to open defense.

It also teaches that Mary is not optional in the order God has established. If is necessary and if Our Lady is the Mother given by Christ within that order of , then Marian help cannot be treated as devotional surplus. What is said of Mary is said, in proper ecclesial sense, of : maternal, militant, fruitful, and victorious under God.

Our Lady of Victory belongs in this treasury because the faithful need to remember that heaven does not withdraw from public battle. Marian tenderness is not opposed to militant Catholic memory. It forms it.
