False Mercy

1. Mercy Calls the Sinner Out of Sin

Watchtower of Errors: doctrines named clearly from the safety of truth so they can be resisted.

is one of the most dangerous masks of . It speaks gently, weeps easily, avoids hard words, and claims to protect wounded souls. But it refuses to call sin sin, error error, and danger danger.

True mercy saves. soothes while the soul remains in mortal peril. It is not kindness to leave a man asleep in a burning house because waking him would frighten him.

is especially powerful because it imitates the tenderness of Christ while refusing the purpose of that tenderness. Christ stoops to sinners in order to raise them. stoops in order to sit beside them and call the fall a home.

The Catholic Doctrine

Our Lord forgives sinners, but He calls them out of sin. To the woman taken in adultery He says, "Go, and now sin no more" (John 8:11). Mercy does not deny the sin. Mercy rescues the sinner from it.

The Gospel begins with repentance: "Do : for the kingdom of heaven is at hand" (Matthew 3:2). The mercy of Christ is not permission to remain unchanged. It is power to return.

Mercy and judgment are not enemies. Mercy matters because judgment is real. If there were no mortal danger, mercy would become sentiment. Because souls can be lost, mercy must tell the truth.

The confessional is the great school of true mercy. There the sinner accuses himself, receives if properly disposed, accepts , and rises to life. wants the comfort of without accusation, the relief of welcome without conversion, and the language of healing without the wound being named.

The prophet's watchman is condemned if he sees danger and does not warn. That is the opposite of . The watchman does not love the city by keeping the trumpet quiet. The shepherd does not love the sheep by letting the approach silently. Mercy warns because mercy believes the danger is real.

The False Principle

The false principle is that compassion must avoid judgment. If naming sin causes pain, says the name must be softened. If doctrine wounds feelings, doctrine must be muted. If repentance seems difficult, the sinner must be reassured before he is converted.

This is not the mercy of Christ. It is the fear of man dressed as tenderness.

changes the order of . Instead of loving the soul toward heaven, it loves emotional peace now. It treats immediate comfort as higher than eternal salvation.

It also steals the sinner's dignity. True mercy treats the sinner as one who can repent by , fight, rise, and become holy. treats him as too fragile for truth and too weak for . It flatters him while insulting him.

It also changes the meaning of . True bears with weakness while helping the soul move toward God. False becomes permission to remain unchanged. It says "gradual" when it means never. It says "accompaniment" when it means silence.

Bride and Counterfeit

is merciful because she tells the truth and gives the means of healing: confession, , true , doctrine, prayer, fasting, correction, and of life.

is sentimental. She calls chains wounds, wounds identities, and identities sacred. She leaves the sinner where he is and praises herself for not judging him.

wounds to heal. caresses while poison spreads.

loves because it lets her bless every false union. She can join herself to sexual disorder, false religion, , , and cowardice while saying that she is only being tender. She has relations with every error and calls the resulting confusion compassion.

How Wolves Use It

use by making correction look cruel. They say that moral law must be applied gradually until it ceases to command. They say that accompaniment means walking with souls while refusing to tell them where the road leads. They say that doctrine must bend before suffering.

They also use the 's strategy: keep souls calm, keep them busy with a harmless idea of holiness, and keep them from hatred of . They tell the sheep that warning about crisis, sin, false worship, or false shepherds is too negative. They call silence mercy.

This is how souls are destroyed tenderly.

The 's sentence belongs here with full force. "My people are too busy trying to become holy than to worry about that stuff" is dressed as spiritual focus. It spares souls the discomfort of knowing danger, but it does not spare them the danger. There is no holiness where there is no hatred of . A shepherd who will not disturb sheep when approach is not merciful. He is useful to the .

also use to accuse the faithful. If a Catholic names , he is divisive. If he names , he is harsh. If he warns against false worship, he is unwelcoming. If he tells the truth about the crisis, he is negative. Thus mercy is weaponized against the .

What False Mercy Destroys

It destroys confession because sin is no longer plainly accused.

It destroys because sorrow becomes self-acceptance.

It destroys fear of hell because judgment is treated as incompatible with love.

It destroys fatherhood and priesthood because correction is treated as abuse.

It destroys hatred of because poison is renamed woundedness.

It destroys because becomes comfort without salvation.

It destroys 's by making her appear willing to tolerate what Christ died to destroy.

The Catholic Response

The Catholic response is mercy with truth. Speak gently where gentleness is needed, but speak truly. Name sin. Offer hope. Command repentance. Encourage confession. Help the soul leave the occasion of sin. Pray and sacrifice.

Do not confuse firmness with cruelty. A father who warns his child is not cruel. A priest who names is not cruel. A friend who calls a soul out of danger is not cruel.

Mercy is not God's agreement with our ruin. Mercy is God stooping to raise us from it.

The Catholic must be tender without lying and severe without cruelty. A bruised reed must not be broken, but neither may it be planted in poisoned soil. Mercy calls the sinner by name, names the sin, opens the road home, and walks with him toward God.
