Modernism
12. Modernism and Living Tradition
Watchtower of Errors: doctrines named clearly from the safety of truth so they can be resisted.
loves to speak of living . The phrase can sound Catholic because is indeed living in . The danger comes when living is made to mean doctrinal mutation, as though the Faith lives by becoming something else.
Catholic is living because lives, teaches, worships, defends, and hands down what she received. It is not living because it changes meaning from age to age. Life preserves identity. A living body grows as the same body. It does not become another creature.
Tradition Hands Down
means handing down. receives from Christ and the apostles, guards the deposit, teaches it, defines it when needed, and gives it to the faithful. She is not the author of revelation. She is its guardian and teacher.
shifts the idea of away from handing down and toward development as religious self-expression. becomes the unfolding consciousness of the believing community. In that scheme, what matters is not the fixed deposit but the movement of religious life through history.
That is not Catholic . It is historical process replacing sacred trust.
Living Does Not Mean Elastic
The word living is often used to make elasticity sound holy. A doctrine is said to be living because its meaning can move. A condemnation is said to be historically conditioned. A discipline is treated as an expression of one age's consciousness. The old form remains honored, but no longer binding in the same meaning.
This is how rupture dresses itself as life.
True development can clarify, defend, and unfold what was present. It cannot reverse the meaning, empty the doctrine, or make 's prior judgment obsolete in principle.
The Rule Of Identity
The faithful should apply the rule of identity. Is the same doctrine preserved? Is the same meaning guarded? Is the same judgment maintained? Does the new explanation make the received Faith clearer, or does it make the received Faith embarrassing?
often says that now understands more deeply, but the result is less certainty, less repentance, less seriousness, less distinction between truth and error, and less reverence in worship. That is not deeper understanding. It is decay with a scholarly face.
Living bears Catholic fruit.
The Catholic Response
Love as a living inheritance, not as a museum and not as clay. The faithful should neither freeze legitimate Catholic explanation nor surrender fixed meaning. They should receive, guard, and hand down.
This requires . 's is vast and luminous. It contains Scripture, Fathers, councils, papal condemnations, catechisms, liturgy, saints, theology, law, devotions, and the ordinary Catholic instinct formed by all these together.
wants to become permission for novelty. Catholic faith receives as a sacred trust.
