Religious Relativism

1. Truth Is Not Divided Among Contradictions

Watchtower of Errors: doctrines named clearly from the safety of truth so they can be resisted.

Religious relativism is with a theory. It teaches that contradictory religions are limited expressions of a larger truth, or that God positively wills religious contradiction as a kind of diversity. It turns error into variety and betrayal into breadth.

This error must be exposed because it attacks the mind at the level of first principles. If contradiction can be true in religion, then revelation has lost its . If every religion is a path, then Christ is no longer the Way in the absolute sense in which He spoke.

Relativism is not . It is refusal to let God speak definitively. It says man is too limited to know, but then it knows enough to correct every exclusive claim made by Christ and His .

Gregory XVI condemned the madness that liberty of and worship is a right for each man. That condemnation is not a museum piece. Religious relativism is the same poison with gentler manners. It does not always demand open ; it only asks the Catholic to treat contradiction as though God had not spoken clearly enough to bind all men.

Christ Is Not One Religious Option

Our Lord says, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). This is not poetic encouragement. It is divine exclusivity. Christ is not one symbol among many. He is Truth itself.

If Christ is Truth, then a doctrine that denies Him cannot be another form of truth. A religion that denies the Trinity, rejects the Incarnation, refuses the sacrifice of the Mass, dissolves apostolic , or turns salvation into human effort cannot be called equally true.

Relativism flatters men by making every road seem meaningful. Christ saves men by calling them out of false roads.

The martyrs understood this. They did not die because all worship was equally meaningful. They died because false worship is false, Christ is Lord, and no earthly power may demand religious compromise.

One pinch of incense mattered because worship is not a private symbol emptied of objective meaning. Worship either honors the true God according to truth or it gives religious honor where it must not be given. Relativism cannot understand the martyrs because relativism cannot understand the First Commandment.

The False Principle

The false principle is that religion begins from man's search rather than God's revelation. If religion begins from man, then many religions can be treated as equally sincere attempts to reach the divine. But the Catholic Faith does not begin from man's religious hunger. It begins from God speaking, God entering history, God founding a , God instituting , and God commanding .

Once that is understood, relativism collapses. Contradictory religions may contain fragments of natural truth, moral insight, or remnants of revelation; but fragments are not . A fragment cannot claim the rights of the whole.

To acknowledge fragments is not to bless the false religion as a path. A broken mirror may catch light. It is still broken. The Catholic may recognize what is true in another religion without treating the error surrounding it as safe.

Bride and Counterfeit

The receives one Faith from one Lord. She is Catholic not because she absorbs every contradiction, but because she possesses the fullness Christ gave her for all nations.

offers a catholicity. She appears because she has room for everyone and everything. She can welcome every false worship, every false doctrine, every political idol, and every moral inversion because she is not governed by truth. Her is not catholicity. It is promiscuity.

This distinction is essential. is because she calls all nations into one truth. is because she lets all errors remain.

's breadth is attractive because it avoids the pain of conversion. No one must leave idols, deny false prophets, abandon , or submit to the altar. Everyone is affirmed where he stands. This is not Catholic mercy. It is religious adultery made polite.

How Wolves Use It

use relativism through beautiful language: respect, encounter, dialogue, diversity, shared values, spiritual riches, common pilgrimage. Some of those words can have a lawful meaning. But in the mouth of a they become veils for refusing conversion.

The says that every has something to teach . He says that God is encountered equally in many paths. He says that doctrinal certainty is arrogance. He says that the Catholic must learn from false worship.

This is spiritual adultery disguised as openness.

The uses relativism when he tells souls not to worry about false religion, false worship, or the crisis, as long as people are sincere and trying to be holy. But there is no holiness where there is no hatred of . A holiness that treats religious contradiction as safe has already surrendered the First Commandment.

is relativism in pastoral dress. It may not always say that all religions are equally true. It may only place them together, pray as though contradiction were harmless, praise their spiritual riches without demanding conversion, and train the sheep to feel ashamed of holy exclusivity. That is enough to weaken the soul.

What Religious Relativism Destroys

It destroys the First Commandment by making false worship appear religiously .

It destroys the missionary command by making conversion seem unnecessary.

It destroys the by replacing unity with plurality, holiness with sincerity, catholicity with mixture, and with religious evolution.

It destroys martyrdom. The martyrs died rather than offer a pinch of incense to false worship. Relativism says the incense was only another form of religious expression.

It destroys the soul's fear of error. Once error appears as a path, the soul stops fleeing it.

It destroys the meaning of 's by making fidelity look narrow and adultery look generous.

The Catholic Response

The Catholic response is not for persons outside . Many souls are confused, misled, wounded, or ignorant. They must be loved, prayed for, and instructed.

But love must never tell a soul that contradiction is safe. God may draw souls mysteriously, but He does not make false religion true. Whatever reaches a soul reaches him through Christ, not through the truth of error.

Therefore Catholics must speak with precision. There is one Savior, one , one Faith, one baptism, one sacrifice, one order, one divine revelation. Religious relativism is not generous. It is refusal to let God be God.

Love persons outside enough to desire their conversion. Pray for them by name. Show toward ignorance and wounds. But never tell them, directly or indirectly, that the road of contradiction is safe.

The safer-sounding lie is often the cruelest one.
