December intention
The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
As Advent prepares the Church for the Nativity, the Immaculate Conception displays God's victorious preparation of the Mother of the Redeemer. Ask for hatred of sin, purity of heart, and readiness to receive Christ.
Intention
For the preservation of baptismal innocence, the recovery of purity through repentance, and faithful preparation for the coming of Our Lord.
A faithful act
Remove voluntary occasions of sin and needless distractions as an Advent offering through Our Lady.
Prayer
O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee, and prepare our souls for Jesus.
Saturday remembrance
The Blessed Virgin Mary
Saturday is kept in filial remembrance of Our Lady, who remained faithful when Our Lord lay hidden in the tomb. Walk with Mary toward Jesus by imitating her faith, purity, recollection, and perseverance.
Intention
For growth in true devotion to Mary, the conversion of sinners, the protection of purity, and perseverance in the Catholic Faith.
A faithful act
Set the goal of praying the complete traditional Rosary today: all fifteen decades of the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries. Offer it for a definite intention, especially for the conversion and salvation of sinners. If the duties of your state require it, pray its three parts at different hours, but persevere toward completing the whole Rosary. Souls are in need: at Fatima, Our Lady warned that many souls go to hell because there is no one to make sacrifices and pray for them.

At Alexandria, in Egypt, blessed Nemesius, martyr, who was first denounced before the judge as a robber, but on being freed from that charge, was soon after, in the persecution of Decius, accused before the judge Emilian of being a Christian. By him he was twice subjected to the torture, and condemned to be burned alive with robbers, thus bearing a resemblance to our Saviour, who was crucified with thieves. — At Mcsea, the Saints Darius, Zosimus, Paul, and Secundus, martyrs. — At Nicomedia, the holy martyrs Cyriacus, Paulillus, Secundus, Anastasius, Sindimius, and their companions. — In Mauritania (Barbary), St. Timothy, deacon, who, after enduring a painful imprisonment for the faith of Christ, was cast into the fire, where he consummated his martyr dom. — At Gaza, in Palestine, the martyrdom of the Saints Meuris and Thea. — At Avignon, blessed Urban V., who deserved well of the Church by restoring the Apostolic See to Rome, by bringing about a reunion of the Latins and the Greeks, and by suppressing heretics. The winter fast of expectation and ordination prayer.
The Advent Ember Days sanctify the season of expectation with fasting, prayer, and supplication for the Church's ministers.
They teach that preparation for Christmas must include purification. The Church asks the Lord of the harvest for holy laborers and asks that her own children be made ready for the coming King.

Error to resist
The Advent that becomes noise and consumption instead of fasting, prayer, and longing for Christ.
For the pilgrim in exile
Let the Ember fast make Advent serious without making it gloomy. The King is near, and the Church prepares with prayer.

Meditation
O Root of Jesse, Stand as a Sign
On Ember Saturday the Church waits with the prophets for the Root of Jesse, before whom kings shall be silent and whom the nations shall seek. Christ's kingdom grows from promises the world thought buried, and no apparent weakness can annul God's fidelity. Unite prayer and penance for those to be ordained and for nations estranged from their King.
