Saturday remembrance
The Blessed Virgin Mary
Saturday is kept in filial remembrance of Our Lady, who remained faithful when Our Lord lay hidden in the tomb. Walk with Mary toward Jesus by imitating her faith, purity, recollection, and perseverance.
Intention
For growth in true devotion to Mary, the conversion of sinners, the protection of purity, and perseverance in the Catholic Faith.
A faithful act
Set the goal of praying the complete traditional Rosary today: all fifteen decades of the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries. Offer it for a definite intention, especially for the conversion and salvation of sinners. If the duties of your state require it, pray its three parts at different hours, but persevere toward completing the whole Rosary. Souls are in need: at Fatima, Our Lady warned that many souls go to hell because there is no one to make sacrifices and pray for them.
Prayer
Blessed Mother, keep me under thy mantle, receive this day into thy hands, and lead me in all things to Jesus.

At Rome, the birthday of the holy martyrs Alexander, Abundius, Antigonus, and Fortunatus. — At Alexandria, the passion of St. Julian, martyr. — Although he was so afflicted with the gout that he could neither walk, not stand, he was taken before the judge with two servants, who carried him in a chair. One of these denied his faith, but the other, named Eunus, persevered with Julian in confessing Christ. Both were set on camels, led through the whole city, scourged, and burned alive in the presence of the people. — In the same city, St. Besas, a soldier, who was denounced to the judge, because he had reproved those who insulted the martyrs just mentioned. As he continued to proclaim his attachment to the faith, he was beheaded — At Seville, in Spain, the birthday of St. Leander, bishop of that city, by whose preaching and labors, with the assistance of King Recared, the nation of the Visigoths was converted from the Arian impiety to the Catholic faith. — At Constantinople, in the time of the emperor Leo, the holy confessors Basil and Procopius, who fought courageously for the worship of holy images. — At Lyons, St. Baldomer. a man of God, whose tomb is made illustrious by frequent miracles.

“The Sorrowful Virgin was, as it were, the whole rule of his life and the teacher of the holiness he attained.”
Doctrine taught
- The Breviary remembers the young Francis turning from worldly vanity after illness and a summons received before an image of the Blessed Virgin, then entering the Passionists as Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin.
- Regular observance, daily exercise of every virtue, meditation on the Passion, and ardent love of the Holy Eucharist formed him into the good odor of Christ.
- His devotion to Our Lady centered especially upon her suffering with Jesus; Marian sorrow became a school of humility, obedience, chastity, mortification, and intimate union with God.
- The Third Nocturn completes the lesson through St. Bede: childlike innocence receives Christ's teaching without proud resistance, obeying the Lord simply and faithfully.

The Cross in Exile
Humiliation, opposition, and penance do not mean that God has ceased to govern. Our Lord redeemed the world through His obedient suffering on the Cross. When Catholics accept unavoidable trials without sin, perform penance, and continue obeying the truth, those sufferings can humble pride and deepen fidelity rather than lead to despair.
