Saturday remembrance
The Blessed Virgin Mary
Saturday is kept in filial remembrance of Our Lady, who remained faithful when Our Lord lay hidden in the tomb. Walk with Mary toward Jesus by imitating her faith, purity, recollection, and perseverance.
Intention
For growth in true devotion to Mary, the conversion of sinners, the protection of purity, and perseverance in the Catholic Faith.
A faithful act
Set the goal of praying the complete traditional Rosary today: all fifteen decades of the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries. Offer it for a definite intention, especially for the conversion and salvation of sinners. If the duties of your state require it, pray its three parts at different hours, but persevere toward completing the whole Rosary. Souls are in need: at Fatima, Our Lady warned that many souls go to hell because there is no one to make sacrifices and pray for them.

Blessed Mother, keep me under thy mantle, receive this day into thy hands, and lead me in all things to Jesus.

Roman Martyrology - October 16
In Africa, two hundred and seventy holy martyrs crowned together. — In the same country, the Saints Martinian and Saturnian with their two brothers. In the reign of the Arian king Genseric, while the persecution of the Vandals was raging, they were slaves belonging to a man of that race, and being converted to the faith of Christ by Maxima, a slave like themselves, they manifested their attachment to the truth with such courage, that they were beaten with rough clubs and lacerated in all parts of their bodies to the very bone. Although this barbarous treatment was continued for a considerable period, their wounds were each time healed over night, wherefore they were at length sent into exile. There they converted many barbarians to the faith, and obtained -from the Roman Pontiff a priest and other ministers to baptize them. Finally they were condemned to die by being dragged through thorns, with their feet tied behind running chariots. Maxima being miraculously delivered after enduring many tribulations, became the Superioress of a large monastery of virgins, where she ended her days in peace. — Also, the Saints Saturninus, Nereus, and three hundred and sixtyfive other martyrs. — At Cologne, St. Eliphius, martyr, under Julian the Apostate. — Also, St. Bercharius, abbot and martyr. — Near Bourges, St. Ambrose, bishop of Cahors. — At Mayence, St. Lullus, bishop and confessor. — At Treves, St. Florentinus, bishop. — At Arbon, in Switzerland, St. Gall, abbot, disciple of blessed Columban. — On Mount Cassino, blessed Victor III., who succeeded Gregory VII. in the papal chair and threw new lustre rounjd the Holy See by the signal triumph he gained over the Saracens through the divine assistance. The veneration paid to him from time immemorial Pope Leo XIII. approved and confirmed. — At Muro, in Lucania, St. Gerard Majella, a professed lay brother in the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. Pius X., on account of his reputation for miracles ranked him among the saints.

The Blessed Virgin Mary
The faithful Virgin kept before the Church on Saturday.
The Saturday Mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary keeps Our Lady before the faithful during ordinary weeks, teaching that Christian perseverance remains Marian: humble, obedient, recollected, and near Christ.
This observance does not turn attention away from Our Lord. It shows the soul how to receive Him: hearing the word of God, keeping it, and remaining faithful when the week has been ordinary.
For the faithful in exile, Saturday can become a weekly return to the Mother. She teaches purity without coldness, firmness without pride, and patience when the road feels hidden.
Virtue to practice
Marian recollection and obedient hearing.
Error to resist
The habit of treating days without a greater feast as spiritually empty.
For the pilgrim in exile
Let Saturday become a small Marian gate in the week. In exile, ordinary days need a motherly refuge as much as feast days do.

An ordinary feria asks whether yesterday's light has become today's virtue. Good desires do not yet make the patient, pure, truthful, or courageous soul; repeated acts under grace do. Practice every virtue duty requires, with particular attention to the virtue most opposed by your predominant fault.
