Sacred Calendar

The Roman year ordered for memory, penance, feasts, saints, and the daily pilgrimage of the faithful.

Calendar standard

Pre-1955 Roman usage

The calendar follows the universal Roman year under the rubrics of Pope St. Pius X, with the Roman Martyrology preserved as a distinct daily witness.

The day is presented for prayer, recollection, study, and perseverance in the City.

Daily observance

Today in the City of God

The Church keeps this day in holy time. The Pilgrim's Companion gathers the feast, daily quote, Martyrology, meditation, prayer, and related chapters into one daily path through the City.

Rank: Greater Double

Quote for the day

Thomas à Kempis

In the cross is salvation, in the cross is life, in the cross is protection against our enemies, in the cross is infusion of heavenly sweetness, in the cross is strength of mind, in the cross joy of spirit, in the cross the height of virtue, in the cross the perfection of sanctity.

Of the Imitation of Christ, Book II, chapter 12, §2

The pilgrim's devotional rhythm

Keeping the month and the weekday in prayer

This chosen devotional rhythm does not change the feast, rank, or obligations shown above. It gives the passing days a steady intention, helping the pilgrim honor God, intercede for souls, and carry one Catholic practice into the day. It is a household aid to devotion, not another law of the Roman Calendar.

August intention

The Immaculate Heart of Mary

The Immaculate Heart of Mary is wholly ordered to God: pure, recollected, obedient, and steadfast beneath the Cross. Entrust this month to Our Lady and ask her to teach you to keep the words of Christ, hate sin, and remain faithful when fidelity costs you.

Intention

In reparation for offenses against Our Lady; for the conversion of sinners; and for purity, recollection, fidelity to Catholic truth, and perseverance beneath the Cross.

A faithful act

Offer all your daily duties to God through Mary before beginning them, and guard a short period of silence in imitation of her recollection.

Prayer

Immaculate Heart of Mary, take this month's prayer, work, and suffering into thy hands and lead us faithfully to Jesus.

Saturday remembrance

The Blessed Virgin Mary

Saturday is kept in filial remembrance of Our Lady, who remained faithful when Our Lord lay hidden in the tomb. Walk with Mary toward Jesus by imitating her faith, purity, recollection, and perseverance.

Intention

For growth in true devotion to Mary, the conversion of sinners, the protection of purity, and perseverance in the Catholic Faith.

A faithful act

Set the goal of praying the complete traditional Rosary today: all fifteen decades of the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries. Offer it for a definite intention, especially for the conversion and salvation of sinners. If the duties of your state require it, pray its three parts at different hours, but persevere toward completing the whole Rosary. Souls are in need: at Fatima, Our Lady warned that many souls go to hell because there is no one to make sacrifices and pray for them.

Prayer

Blessed Mother, keep me under thy mantle, receive this day into thy hands, and lead me in all things to Jesus.

Monthly devotion

First Saturday

Reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

The first Saturday of the month is Our Lady's tender and urgent invitation to make reparation to her Immaculate Heart. She asks the faithful to confess, receive Holy Communion, pray five decades of the Rosary, and keep her company for fifteen minutes while meditating upon its mysteries, on five consecutive first Saturdays. Mary keeps nothing for herself: she gathers souls beneath her mantle in order to form them for Jesus Christ, hatred of sin, and perseverance beneath His Cross.

Intention

In reparation for blasphemy, ingratitude, impurity, and contempt directed against Our Lady; for the conversion of sinners; and for the grace to imitate her recollection, purity, obedience, and unwavering fidelity to Jesus Christ.

A faithful act

With the intention of making reparation, confess within the permitted time, receive Holy Communion worthily, pray five decades of the Rosary, and keep Our Lady company for fifteen minutes while meditating upon the mysteries of the Rosary. If sacramental participation is impossible today, begin with the acts that are possible and ask for the grace to keep the complete devotion faithfully.

Our Lady's First Saturday Promise

In the devotion officially published by the Bishop of Leiria in 1939, Our Lady promises to assist at the hour of death, with the graces necessary for salvation, those who fulfill the requested acts on the first Saturday of five consecutive months. This maternal promise calls the soul to reparation, sacramental fidelity, the Rosary, and persevering companionship with Mary in the mysteries of her Divine Son.

Voz da Fátima, year XVIII, no. 205, October 13, 1939, p. 1, reporting the Bishop of Leiria's official publication of the Five First Saturdays on September 13, 1939.

But Mary kept all these words, pondering them in her heart.

Holy Scripture - Luke 2:19, Douay-Rheims

Prayer

Immaculate Heart of Mary, keep me with thee in the mysteries of Jesus. Obtain for me purity of heart, hatred of sin and heresy, fidelity to the Catholic Faith, and perseverance beneath the Cross. Place this day's prayer and sacrifice in the hands of thy Divine Son.

Highlighted saint

Dedication of Our Lady of the Snow

A Roman Marian feast of purity, worship, and obedience.

The feast honors the dedication of the Roman basilica of St. Mary Major, one of the great Marian churches of Rome, long associated with Our Lady under the title of the Snow.

The basilica's memory turns devotion toward the Mother of God into worship of her Son, reverence for sacred places, gratitude for Catholic Rome, and purity of heart.

Virtue to practice

Marian purity joined to obedience.

Error to resist

The sentimental devotion that praises Mary while neglecting worship, purity, and obedience.

For the pilgrim in exile

Let Our Lady lead the heart into the Church's worship. Marian love becomes most Catholic when it makes the soul more reverent before Christ.

Imitate today

  • Honor Our Lady by obeying her Son.
  • Keep churches and holy things with reverence.
  • Ask for purity of mind and body.

From Matins

The summer snow and a Roman house for Our Lady.

Matins - Second Nocturn - Dedication of the Church of Our Lady of the Snow

Roman Breviary, Proper lessons for the Dedication of Our Lady of the Snow

They would make the most holy Virgin Mother of God their heiress.

Doctrine taught

  • The proper lessons tell of John and his wife, who consecrated their inheritance to the Blessed Virgin and asked her to show how it should be used.
  • The miraculous snow on the Esquiline and the matching vision granted to Pope Liberius direct private generosity into public sacred worship.
  • The basilica later called St. Mary Major stands as a Roman witness that Marian devotion belongs within the ordered prayer and visible life of the Church.

For the pilgrim in exile

Offer possessions and plans to God without trying to dictate their use. Our Lady of the Snow teaches generous prayer, obedience to providential signs, and reverence expressed in sacred worship.

Full Breviary lessons

Fourth Lesson - Complete Proper Lesson

In the time of Pope Liberius, there lived at Rome a certain nobleman named John and a noble lady his wife, who had no children to whom to leave their substance. Then they vowed that they would make the most holy Virgin Mother of God their heiress, and earnestly besought her in some way to make known to them upon what godly work she would that the money should be spent. The blessed Virgin Mary graciously listened to their prayers and heart-felt earnestness, and by a miracle assured them of her will.

Fifth Lesson - Complete Proper Lesson

On the 5th day of August, which is that time when the heat of summer waxeth greatest in Rome, a part of the Esquiline Hill was covered by night with snow. And on this same night the Mother of God appeared in a dream to John and his wife separately, and told them that on that spot, which in the morning they should see clad with snow, they should build a Church, to be dedicated in the name of the Virgin Mary, for that this was the way in which she chose that they should make her their heiress. John went and told it to Pope Liberius, who declared that he also had been visited by a like dream.

Sixth Lesson - Complete Proper Lesson

Therefore he came in a solemn procession of Priests and people to the snow-clad hill, and traced upon that spot the plan of a Church which was built with the money of John and his wife. It was afterwards rebuilt by Sixtus III. At the beginning it was called by divers names, sometimes the Liberian Basilica, sometimes the Church of St. Mary-at-the-Manger. Howbeit, since there are in Rome many Churches called after the Holy Virgin Mary, and this Church doth excel them all, both in honour, and because of the strange sign wherewith it was dedicated, it hath come to be called the Church of St. Mary, the Greater. The memory of the dedication thereof is kept every year by a Feast-day that taketh name from the wonderful fall of snow which on this day took place.

Breviary Witness

A Marian basilica and the purity of worship.

Matins - Dedication of Our Lady of the Snow

Breviary witness

  • The Breviary remembrance of St. Mary Major directs Marian devotion into the Church's sacred worship and the Roman memory of Our Lady.
  • Our Lady is honored rightly when her basilicas, feasts, and titles lead souls to hear and keep the word of her Son with purity.

For the pilgrim in exile

Let Marian devotion become reverence. Love for Our Lady should purify worship, speech, dress, home, and the whole interior life.

Gospel of the day

Blessed are they who hear the word of God.

Dedication of Our Lady of the Snow - Luke 11:27-28

Yea rather, blessed are they who hear the word of God, and keep it.

What Our Lord teaches

  • The Church honors Our Lady by hearing and keeping the word of her Son.
  • A Marian basilica teaches that devotion must become obedience, purity, and worship.

Virtue to practice

Honor Our Lady by obeying every known command of her Divine Son, not by sentiment alone.

Error to resist

The devotion that praises Mary's blessedness while refusing her Son's word.

For the pilgrim in exile

Let Our Lady gather the heart into worship. The snow-white sign points to purity, but purity must be kept by obedience.

Meditation

Growth After Pentecost

After Pentecost the Church teaches the soul how grace matures. Consolation is not enough. The Spirit of truth forms endurance, obedience, hatred of heresy, reverence for true worship, and courage to confess Christ when the world calls fidelity narrow.

Prayer

The day should become prayer.

O Lord, keep me from Pharaoh's pride. When Moses delivered Thy command, Pharaoh asked, 'Who is the Lord, that I should hear his voice?' Do not let me answer Thy known will with the same refusal.

Thought for the pilgrim

The root of revolt is refusal to hear God.

Practice

The day should become obedience.

Obey God's commandments, fulfill your known duties, and receive just correction today as a direct answer to the temptation to say, 'I will not serve.'
