CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Within the Privileged Octave of Corpus Christi 2027-05-31 - Time after Pentecost - Privileged Octave of the Second Order - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Within the Privileged Octave of Corpus Christi is the principal observance today. The calendar also preserves St. Angela Merici, Virgin on this date. The secondary saint panel below comes from that secondary observance. That material adds another traditional lesson for the date; it does not replace the principal observance. Octave: an eight-day extension of a major feast, allowing the Church to continue praying over the same mystery. Eucharist: the sacrament in which, after the consecration at Mass, Jesus Christ is truly present—Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity—under the appearances of bread and wine. Commemoration: a shorter liturgical remembrance of another saint or observance occurring on the same day. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR The Time after Pentecost is the long school of the Holy Ghost. The fire given at Pentecost must become doctrine believed, worship guarded, commandments kept, homes ordered, tongues governed, and charity practiced without novelty or disorder. Receive from Jesus through Mary only so that you may belong and return more completely to Jesus. Ask Jesus for mercy through His Mother and offer yourself as an instrument by which His charity may reach the persons entrusted to you. "She is His mysterious canal; she is His aqueduct, through which He makes His mercies flow gently and abundantly." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 24 Christ is the source; Mary is the canal. The distinction is essential. She neither originates grace nor replaces Our Lord's sacrifice, Church, or sacraments. Everything she gives is His, and her whole maternal action carries souls toward union with Him. An aqueduct receives in order to convey. Imitate that self-forgetful service. Whatever truth, time, strength, material good, consolation, or spiritual help God sends should not stagnate in self-possession. Let it pass through your duties into prayer, charity, reparation, and service of souls. PRACTICE Fulfill your ordinary duties promptly and offer them for the glory of God. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Because Christ instituted the sacraments, the Church must guard their matter, form, minister, and intention with holy fear. The grace to be practiced is Eucharistic adoration and hunger, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice generosity by receiving God's gifts gratefully and placing them at the service of His glory and your neighbor's salvation. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist sacramental casualness, especially the idea that good intention can repair invalid rites or invented forms. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing eucharistic adoration and hunger when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Renounce possessiveness over gifts, time, spiritual consolations, and the fruit of good works. Use all your duties, prayers, resources, and opportunities as channels of truth and charity without seeking ownership of the good accomplished. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of holy; the witness placed beside it is St. Thomas Aquinas. Your resolution before God: Fulfill your ordinary duties promptly and offer them for the glory of God. Carry this word: Grace is guarded by ordinary fidelity. Fulfill earthly duties well precisely because they are the road appointed by God, but keep the heart free for the City that does not pass away. DAILY EXAMEN Ask whether grace ended in self-satisfaction or flowed onward into obedience, reparation, intercession, and works of mercy. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, strengthen the little duties of this day with Thy grace, that nothing entrusted to me may be wasted through negligence or vanity. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
