CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Friday after the Octave of the Ascension 2028-06-02 - Eastertide - Semi-Double - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Friday after the Octave of the Ascension is the principal observance today. The calendar also preserves Ss. Peter and Marcellinus, Martyrs, and St. Erasmus, Bishop and Martyr on this date. The secondary saint and Breviary sermon or lesson panels below come from that secondary observance. That material adds another traditional lesson for the date; it does not replace the principal observance. Octave: an eight-day extension of a major feast, allowing the Church to continue praying over the same mystery. Ascension: Christ's return to the Father in His glorified humanity forty days after the Resurrection. Martyr: a Christian who was killed rather than deny Christ or abandon the Faith. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR Ss. Peter and Marcellinus served Christ in humbler stations, while St. Erasmus bore the responsibility of a bishop. Their common martyrdom teaches that every office is judged by fidelity to Christ: hidden service and public authority must both refuse compromise when the Faith is threatened. Look upon Our Lady's heavenly exaltation as God's recompense for the humility with which she descended beneath every creature. Honor Our Lady as Queen beneath Christ the King and ask for the profound humility that submits every power to God. "Mary commands in the heavens the Angels and the Blessed. As a recompense for her profound humility, God has given her the power and permission to fill with Saints the empty thrones from which the apostate angels fell by pride." God exalts the humble Virgin who called herself His handmaid, while the proud angels lost their thrones through revolt. Her authority manifests His victory and remains wholly subject to the King from whom it comes. The road toward the vacant thrones is therefore not ambition but humility under grace. Renounce the desire to govern what God has not entrusted to you. Rule your passions, obey His law, serve souls, accept obscurity, and allow Our Lady to conduct you by the low road her Son chose. ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - June 2 At Rome, the birthday of the holy martyr Marcellinus, priest, and Peter, exorcist, who instructed in the faith many persons detained in prison. Under Diocletian, they were loaded with chains, and, after enduring many torments, were beheaded by the judge Serenus, in a place which was then called the Black Forest, but which was in their honor afterwards known as the White Forest. Their bodies were buried in a crypt near St. Tiburtius, and pope St. Damasus composed for their tomb an epitaph in verse. — In Campania, during the reign of Decius, St. Erasmus, bishop and martyr, who was first scourged with leaded whips and then severely beaten with rods; he had also rosin, brimstone, lead, pitch, wax, and oil poured over him, without receiving any injury. HIGHLIGHTED SAINT Friday after the Octave of the Ascension The Church keeps watch between Ascension and Pentecost. The Friday after the Octave of the Ascension is kept with the Mass of the preceding Sunday, holding the Church in the days between the Ascension and Pentecost. The faithful hear again Our Lord's promise of the Paraclete and His warning that witness will bring contradiction. Keep watch with the Church after the Ascension. The King reigns, the Paraclete is promised, and witness must be prepared by prayer. SECONDARY SAINT ASSIGNED TO THIS DATE Ss. Peter, Marcellinus, and Erasmus Martyrs who teach fidelity in office, service, and suffering. The Roman calendar honors Ss. Peter and Marcellinus, martyrs, together with St. Erasmus, bishop and martyr. Their feast gathers different forms of witness: sacred office, humble service, and suffering borne for Christ. Martyrdom is not one temperament; it is fidelity under pressure wherever Providence places the soul. Ask these martyrs for steadiness in your own place. Christ does not ask every soul to suffer in the same way, but He asks every soul to be faithful. FROM MATINS Confession strengthened under chains, torments, and the threat of death. Marcellinus and Peter, Martyrs, and St. Erasmus, Bishop and Martyr Roman Breviary "The faith and courage of both increased through the torments." - The Breviary remembers St. Peter exercising deliverance even in prison: the exorcist freed the jailer's daughter, and the converted household received Baptism through St. Marcellinus the priest. - Threats, darkness, chains, torture, and death strengthened rather than extinguished their confession because their courage rested in Christ, not in bodily security. - St. Erasmus likewise survived repeated torments, continued to confirm souls in the Faith, and converted others before receiving the martyr's palm. Divine deliverance served further witness rather than escape from mission. Use every trial to confess Christ more completely. Pray for deliverance, but let every rescue return you to conversion of souls, sacramental faith, courage under authority, and final perseverance rather than to comfortable forgetfulness. FULL BREVIARY LESSONS Third Lesson - Three Martyrs Strengthened through Torment Peter, an exorcist, was sent to prison at Rome by Serenus the judge under the Emperor Diocletian because of his confession of the Christian Faith. There he freed from a demon Paulina, the daughter of Artemius who governed the prison. When this had been done, he brought the girl's parents with their whole household and the neighbors who had gathered at the wonder to Marcellinus the priest, by whom all were baptized. When Serenus heard of this, he rebuked Peter and Marcellinus severely and added threats and terrors to his words unless they denied Christ. Since Marcellinus answered with Christian freedom, Serenus struck him with his fists and ordered that he be shut naked in a prison strewn with fragments of glass, without food or light. He also commanded Peter to be confined in the narrowest bonds. But since the faith and courage of both increased through the torments, they were beheaded and bore illustrious witness to Jesus Christ at a place called the Black Wood, which was afterwards called the White Wood in testimony of the event. Erasmus, a bishop, was beaten in Campania with leaded clubs and drenched with resin, sulphur, molten lead, burning pitch, wax, and oil, yet remained whole and unharmed amid them. By this miracle many were converted to Christ. Cast again into prison and bound with iron and the heaviest chains, he was wonderfully delivered by an angel. Afterwards, under Maximinus, he was subjected to various torments at Formiae, but divine power preserved him through them also. Finally, having confirmed many in the Faith and converted them to the Faith, he received the glorious palm of martyrdom. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Outside the Church There Is No Salvation The Church places this truth before you today: All salvation comes through Christ and His Church; no soul is saved by false religion, indifferentism, or separation loved as separation. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The doctrine does not deny God's mercy. It denies that error, schism, or religious indifference can be treated as paths equal to the Church founded by Christ. The grace to be practiced is Watchful witness in expectation of the Holy Ghost, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice humility in thought, speech, correction, service, prayer, and the faithful use of whatever authority you possess. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist indifferentism, which treats contradictory religions as though they were equally pleasing to God. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing watchful witness in expectation of the Holy Ghost when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Receive being overlooked, contradicted, or assigned lowly work without feeding resentment or seeking revenge. Exercise responsibilities as a stewardship from God, serve those beneath your care, and obey every rightful authority in all lawful things. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is Pope Pius IX. Your resolution before God: Fulfill your duties without complaint and pray for a bishop or priest to remain faithful under pressure. Carry this word: Different duties are united by one fidelity to Christ. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "The most noble and the most perfect victory is for a man to have the victory of himself." Ask for the grace to conquer the fault that most often conquers you. Choose the fault by its frequency, not by how dramatic it appears. The repeated impatient tone, indulgent thought, delayed prayer, or unnecessary complaint may govern more of life than a rare great trial. Meet it today at its first small demand, while grace makes refusal possible. Today's Practice: Choose the harder faithful act once, quietly and at once. DAILY EXAMEN Search for the pride that sought notice, control, exemption, or superiority, and place it beneath the feet of the humble Queen. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, through Thy martyrs, make me faithful in the place Thou hast given me. Preserve both hidden servants and public shepherds from fear and compromise. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
