Protus and Hyacinth, Martyrs 2028-09-11 - Time after Pentecost - Simple - red PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Martyr: a Christian who was killed rather than deny Christ or abandon the Faith. Penance: repentance expressed through prayer, self-denial, reparation, and a real turning away from sin. Asceticism: disciplined prayer and self-denial used to resist sin, govern desire, and grow in freedom for God. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR In the Time after Pentecost, the Church sends the faithful back into daily labor under the light of the Holy Ghost. The soul must not seek fire as excitement only. It must seek the fire that purifies speech, strengthens duty, exposes false peace, and keeps the Church's received worship dear. Contemplate the Incarnate Wisdom dwelling in Mary's womb and living subject to her so you may belong more perfectly to Jesus. Enter Mary's school with Jesus at Nazareth and ask for humble, loving obedience throughout every ordinary and hidden duty. His divine Person never ceased to be omnipotent God; yet in the humility of the Incarnation He sanctified dependence and obedience instead of displaying worldly independence and power. Jesus is the supreme exemplar of going through Mary to glorify the Father and save souls. Submission to her must imitate His filial holiness: it is intelligent, loving, Christward, and governed by God. They were baptized together with her by Bishop Helenus and, devoting themselves to the study of the divine writings, lived for some time among the ascetics in Egypt with wonderful humility and holiness of life. Afterwards they accompanied the holy virgin Eugenia to Rome. During the reign of Gallienus they were arrested in the City for professing the Christian Faith. Since they could by no means be induced to abandon the Christian religion and worship the gods, they were beaten with cruel scourges and beheaded on the third day before the Ides of September. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Christ Is King Over Public Life The Church places this truth before you today: Our Lord's kingship is not confined to private devotion. Men, families, laws, and nations are subject to His authority. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The Church's Catholicity includes the public claim of Christ over all peoples, not merely the private consolation of believers. The grace to be practiced is Steadfast refusal of idolatry, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice filial dependence by receiving Our Lady's formation into Christ's humility, obedience, purity, prayer, labor, and charity. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist secular liberalism, which treats society as though it could be rightly ordered without Christ. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing steadfast refusal of idolatry when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept hiddenness, limitation, routine, rightful dependence, and patient submission when pride demands independence or recognition. Consecrate domestic, vocational, bodily, and spiritual duties to Jesus through Mary, performing them with the fidelity of Nazareth. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of catholic; the witness placed beside it is Pope Pius XI. Your resolution before God: Pray for family members and friends. Love them sincerely, but do not pretend the truth is less serious just to keep peace. Carry this word: Family peace cannot be purchased by surrendering the Faith. Fulfill earthly duties well precisely because they are the road appointed by God, but keep the heart free for the City that does not pass away. DAILY EXAMEN Examine whether pride resisted dependence or duty, then place every failure beneath the obedience of Jesus and Mary at Nazareth. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, make me patient in household division, firm without cruelty, and charitable without compromise. Let peace be made beneath truth, not against it. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
