Good Morning, Pilgrim

Receive this day from God.

In the Time after Pentecost, the Church sends the faithful back into daily labor under the light of the Holy Ghost. The soul must not seek fire as excitement only. It must seek the fire that purifies speech, strengthens duty, exposes false peace, and keeps the Church's received worship dear.

Enter Mary's school with Jesus at Nazareth and ask for humble, loving obedience throughout every ordinary and hidden duty.

Ora — Begin with Prayer

Offer the day before spending it

Prayer gives the day its right beginning and its right end. Before work, conversation, news, or distraction claims the mind, adore the Blessed Trinity and offer every prayer, work, joy, suffering, and temptation to Jesus through Mary. Ask your Guardian Angel for help, and place the souls and needs entrusted to you beneath God's will.

Begin simply. Make the Morning Offering through the hands of Our Lady. Pray the Three Hail Marys for purity and final perseverance, ask your Guardian Angel to govern the senses and imagination, and name the soul or intention for which today's prayers and sacrifices will be offered. Do not rush these acts merely because they are familiar; let them place the whole day beneath God before the world begins to claim it.

O Lord, make me patient in household division, firm without cruelty, and charitable without compromise. Let peace be made beneath truth, not against it.

Roman Breviary, Proper lesson for Ss. Protus and Hyacinth

“They could by no means be induced to abandon the Christian religion.”

• The Breviary presents the brothers Protus and Hyacinth as servants of St. Eugenia who were baptized with her, devoted themselves to Sacred Scripture, and lived among the ascetics of Egypt in humility and holiness.
• Their martyrdom was not an isolated final refusal but the flowering of a life already formed by Baptism, divine truth, ascetic discipline, and faithful companionship.
• When threatened in Rome, they rejected the command to abandon Christianity and worship false gods; no earthly service or demand for obedience could lawfully take precedence over fidelity to Christ.

Let Baptism, Sacred Scripture, prayer, penance, and faithful Catholic companionship prepare the soul for every trial. Ask Saints Protus and Hyacinth for constancy that refuses false worship without bargaining away any part of the Faith.

At Rome, in the Cemetery of Basilla, on the old Salarian road, the birthday of the holy martyrs Protus and Hyacinth, brothers and eunuchs in the service of blessed Eugenia, who were arrested, in the time of the emperor Gallienus, on the charge of being Christians, and urged to offer sacrifice to the gods. But as they refused, both were most severely scourged, and finally beheaded. — At Laodicea, in Syria, the martyrdom of the Saints Diodorus, Diomedes, and Didimus. — At Leon, in Spain, St. Vincent, abbot and martyr. — In Egypt, the holy bishop J'aplmutius, one of those confessors, who, under the emperor Galerius Maxiininus, having their right eye plucked out and the joint of the left knee cut, were condemned to work in the metal mines. Afterwards, under Constantine the Great, he courageously combated for the Catholic faith against the Arians, and at leangth, being adorned with many crowns, rested in peace. — At Lyons, the demise of St. Patiens, bishop. — At Vercelli, St. milian, bishop. — At Alexandria, St. Theodora, who having committed a fault through imprudence and repenting of it, remained unknown in a religious habit, and persevered until her death in practices of extraordinary abstinence and patience.

Ss. Protus and Hyacinth

Brothers and martyrs who refused sacrifice to false gods.

The Martyrology places Saints Protus and Hyacinth in the Cemetery of Basilla on the old Salarian road, brothers in the service of blessed Eugenia and martyrs under Gallienus.

When urged to offer sacrifice to the gods, they refused, were scourged, and were finally beheaded. Their witness teaches that a servant of Christ must be free even when standing before earthly masters.

Let Protus and Hyacinth strengthen your conscience. Catholic obedience is never servility; it is ordered first to God, and therefore refuses false worship.
