Confessor: in the traditional calendar, a male saint who openly professed the Faith by a holy life but was not killed as a martyr. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR St. Bruno withdrew from noise not because the Church's wounds did not matter, but because God must be heard before His servant can judge or act well. Silence exposes ambition, curiosity, and the restless desire to be seen. Give God an undisturbed portion of this day and let recollection make your service purer. Ask the Holy Ghost to strike deep within you the roots of every virtue He formed so perfectly in His faithful Spouse. FULL BREVIARY LESSONS Fourth Lesson - A Father of Monks and Restorer of Hermits Bruno, the Founder of the Charterhouse Monks, was born at Cologne, [about the year of our Lord 1030.] From his earliest years he was a very grave child, turning away from childish things, and that so manifestly, that by the grace of God the tokens of holiness already pointed him out as a Father of monks, and a restorer of the life of hermits. His parents, who were eminent for rank and goodness, sent him to Paris, where he studied so well in Philosophy and Theology, that he took the degree of Doctor in both faculties; and a short while after, for his famous graces, he was made a Canon of Rheims. Fifth Lesson - The Wilderness of Chartreuse After some years, he, and six comrades, forsook the world and betook themselves to Hew, the holy Bishop of Grenoble, who, when he learned the reason of their coming, and believing them to have been figured by seven stars which he had seen that night in a dream falling at his feet, gave them a grant of land in some very wild mountains in his Diocese, which are called the Chartreuses. Thither Bruno and his companions, together with Hew, withdrew themselves, [in the year 1084,] and led for some years the life of hermits. Pope Urban II., who had formerly been his disciple [at Rheims,] commanded him to come to Rome, [in 1089,] and amid the afflictions which then scourged the Church, held him for some time as his counsellor. But at last Bruno, who had refused the Archbishoprick of Reggio, got his leave to go away. Sixth Lesson - Godliness Joined to Learning In his love of the wilderness, he betook himself to a certain desert place in the Diocese of Squillaci, in the uttermost coasts of Calabria, [whither he went in 1090.] He was praying there one day in a cave, when the hounds of Roger, Sovereign Earl of Sicily and Calabria, who was out a-hunting, came and bayed at the door of it. Thus was he found by this Prince, who was moved by his holiness, and began to cherish him and his comrades, and treat them very kindly. The Earl's goodness was rewarded, for when he was one time laying siege to Capua, and one Sergius, who was first groom of his bedchamber, had made a plot to betray him, Bruno, who was still living in the desert above mentioned, appeared to him in a dream, and delivered him from the danger which was hanging over him. At length Bruno, full of graces and good works, and famous for godliness not less than for learning, fell asleep in the Lord, [upon the 6th day of October, in the year 1101,] and was buried in the monastery of St Stephen, founded by the same Earl Roger, where he is still held in great honour. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Obedience Serves Truth The Church places this truth before you today: Catholic obedience is a virtue ordered to God and His truth. It is not servility before contradiction or unlawful command. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Authority is real because it comes from God, but it remains ministerial. It cannot command against the faith it exists to guard. The grace to be practiced is Recollected silence before God, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice the whole order of virtue throughout the day, giving special vigilance to the defects that most frequently oppose grace. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist both rebellion against true authority and false obedience to commands that betray doctrine. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing recollected silence before God when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept sustained discipline, hidden repetition, and slow growth without replacing real virtue with passing fervor or token sacrifice. Fulfill all prayers, duties, penances, acts of charity, and occasions of witness with faith, hope, charity, prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. Thomas Aquinas. Your resolution before God: Honor Our Lady throughout the day and ask what her privileges teach about the Church's fidelity. Carry this word: What is said of Our Lady teaches the soul how to see the Church. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "My son, be waking and diligent in the service of God, and think oft wherefore thou art come, and why thou hast forsaken the world." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 25, p. 45 Fervor is not religious excitement. It is the awakened will that remembers its end and returns to duty when nature grows sluggish. You were created to know, love, and serve God and thereby attain eternal life; every lesser purpose must remain beneath this one. Recall why you began to seek a more faithful Catholic life. Then ask what has cooled: prayer postponed, sacrifice avoided, truth softened, or daily duty performed without love. Do not attempt to recover everything through emotion. Renew the next act, and let diligence carry the soul where feeling does not. Today's Practice: Renew aloud the purpose of your life before God, then complete the duty you have most resisted. DAILY EXAMEN Examine the roots and fruits of the day, thanking God for growth and naming every vice that must be confessed, uprooted, and opposed tomorrow. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord Jesus Christ, form in me a filial love for Thy Mother and a faithful love for Thy Church, that purity, doctrine, suffering, and hope may remain joined. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
