Receive this day from God.

The Commemoration of St. Paul keeps his doctrine, missionary labor, wounds, and perseverance before the Church after the joint feast of the Apostles. Christ warned His witnesses that opposition would come, so suffering does not prove that the road is false; the servant must keep the Faith and finish the duty entrusted to him.

Adore the Blessed Trinity first, then receive with gratitude the Mother whom God freely chose to employ in His works of grace.

Ora — Begin with Prayer

Offer the day before spending it

Prayer gives the day its right beginning and its right end. Before work, conversation, news, or distraction claims the mind, adore the Blessed Trinity and offer every prayer, work, joy, suffering, and temptation to Jesus through Mary. Ask your Guardian Angel for help, and place the souls and needs entrusted to you beneath God's will.

Begin simply. Make the Morning Offering through the hands of Our Lady. Pray the Three Hail Marys for purity and final perseverance, ask your Guardian Angel to govern the senses and imagination, and name the soul or intention for which today's prayers and sacrifices will be offered. Do not rush these acts merely because they are familiar; let them place the whole day beneath God before the world begins to claim it.

O Lord, through St. Paul, give me a heart that continues after wounds. Keep doctrine clear, charity truthful, and labor steadfast until the course Thou hast given me is finished.

St. Paul the Apostle, Second Epistle to Timothy and Second Epistle to the Corinthians

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”

• The Church's separate commemoration lets the faithful remain with St. Paul after the joint solemnity of the Roman Apostles.
• St. Paul measures apostolic life by fidelity completed: doctrine guarded, sufferings endured, the Gospel preached, and the whole life poured out as a sacrifice for Christ.
• His catalogue of labors rejects the expectation that Catholic mission should be spared contradiction. Grace does not make wounds unreal; it makes perseverance possible through them.

Ask St. Paul for perseverance in the entire apostolic duty before you. Keep the Faith, accept the labor it requires, pray for conversions, and refuse to interpret suffering as proof that fidelity has failed.

The commemoration of the holy apostle Paul. — At Limoges, in France, St. Martial, bishop, with two priests, Alpinian and Austriclinian, whose lives were distinguished for miracles. — The same day, the saints Caius, priest, and Leo, subdeacon. — At Alexandria, the passion of St. Basilides, under the eniperor Severus. He protected from the insults of profligate men the saintly virgin Potamioena, whom he was leading to execution, and received from her the reward of his pious action. For, at the end of three days, she appeared to him, and placing a crown on his head, not only converted him to Christ, but by her prayers made of him, after a short combat, a glorious martyr. — At Rome, St. Lucina, a disciple of the Apostles, who relieved the necessities of the saints with her goods, visited the Christians detained in prison, buried the martyrs, and was laid by their side in a crypt constructed by herself. — In the same city, St. Emiliana, martyr. — In the territory of Viviers, St. Ostian, priest and confessor.
