Devotion to the Sacred Heart teaches the soul to answer coldness, sacrilege, and ingratitude with worship, penance, and faithful love. Reparation is not an attempt to improve upon Christ's perfect Sacrifice, but the loving union of our poor offerings with His. Give every inconvenience to Our Lord through Mary for those who receive His gifts without gratitude.
Invoke the Holy Ghost and ask Him to reproduce in you the dispositions He formed so perfectly in Our Lady.

“This is the reason why He, the Holy Ghost, the more He finds Mary, His dear and indissoluble Spouse, in any soul, becomes the more active and mighty in producing Jesus Christ in that soul, and that soul in Jesus Christ.”
The Holy Ghost alone is the divine Sanctifier. Our Lady is wholly His creature and faithful Spouse. Her presence in a soul means that her faith, humility, purity, obedience, prayer, and charity are welcomed there; these dispositions make room for His work rather than resisting it through pride and self-will.
Do not ask merely for Marian feelings. Ask for Marian dispositions throughout the day. The true measure is whether Christ is being formed: whether His truth governs the mind, His commandments govern the will, His charity governs conduct, and His Cross governs the use of suffering.

Offer the day before spending it
Prayer gives the day its right beginning and its right end. Before work, conversation, news, or distraction claims the mind, adore the Blessed Trinity and offer every prayer, work, joy, suffering, and temptation to Jesus through Mary. Ask your Guardian Angel for help, and place the souls and needs entrusted to you beneath God's will.
Begin simply. Make the Morning Offering through the hands of Our Lady. Pray the Three Hail Marys for purity and final perseverance, ask your Guardian Angel to govern the senses and imagination, and name the soul or intention for which today's prayers and sacrifices will be offered. Do not rush these acts merely because they are familiar; let them place the whole day beneath God before the world begins to claim it.
O Lord, where Thou art forgotten, mocked, or coldly received, let me answer with prayer, penance, reverence, and love for Thy Sacred Heart.

Roman Breviary, Proper lessons for St. Margaret Mary Alacoque
“To make reparation for the injuries of ungrateful men.”
- The Breviary forms devotion to the Sacred Heart through St. Margaret Mary's prior life of Marian and Eucharistic love, virginity, prolonged prayer, self-contempt, patience, bodily mortification, and charity toward the poor.

Fourth Lesson - A Life Prepared for the Sacred Heart
Margaret Mary Alacoque was born of an honorable family in a village of the Diocese of Autun, and from her tender years gave signs of future holiness. Burning with love for the Virgin Mother of God and for the august Sacrament of the Eucharist, while still a young girl she vowed her virginity to God, desiring above all to conform her life to the Christian virtues. She delighted in prolonged prayers and contemplation of heavenly things, contempt of self, patience in adversity, affliction of the body, and charity toward her neighbors, especially the needy. With the greatest zeal she strove, according to her strength, to reproduce the most holy examples of the divine Redeemer.
Fifth Lesson - The Heart Burning with Love and Crowned with Thorns
Having entered the Order of the Visitation, she immediately began to shine with the splendor of religious life. She was adorned by God with the gift of higher prayer, other gifts of grace, and frequent visions. The most celebrated of these occurred while she was praying before the Holy Eucharist, when Jesus offered Himself to her sight and showed His divine Heart in His open breast, burning with flames and encircled by thorns. He commanded her, in consideration of such love and to make reparation for the injuries of ungrateful men, to see that public devotion to His Heart was instituted, with great rewards from the heavenly treasury promised to it. When through humility she hesitated and professed herself unequal to so great a work, the most loving Savior gave her courage and at the same time appointed as her guide and helper a man of eminent holiness, Claude de la Colombiere. He strengthened her with hope for the great benefit which afterwards flowed into the Church from devotion to the divine Heart.
Sixth Lesson - Reparation Persevering through Contempt
Margaret strove with all diligence to fulfill the commands of the Redeemer. Yet she did not lack many troubles and bitter insults from those who repeatedly said that she was subject to a vain delusion of mind. She bore all these things with an even spirit and indeed counted them as gain, believing that through reproaches and sufferings she would become a victim pleasing to God and obtain greater assistance for her purpose. Flourishing in the praise of religious perfection and becoming each day more closely united to her heavenly Spouse through contemplation of eternal things, she flew to Him in the forty-third year of her age, in the year of salvation 1690. Distinguished by miracles, she was enrolled among the Saints by Benedict XV, and Pope Pius XI extended her Office to the universal Church.

Look upon the opened side of Christ until devotion becomes serious. The Heart that loves sinners also asks sinners to love, console, and amend.

Doctrine Develops Without Becoming Another Doctrine
Remain here for a little while. The purpose is not to gather another fact, but to allow today's Catholic truth to judge the heart, strengthen the will, and become an act offered to God.
The Church places this truth before you today: True growth in Catholic doctrine preserves the same meaning and the same judgment; it unfolds what was received, without changing the faith into a novelty. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Unity of faith is protected when later expression remains identical in substance with what the Church has always taught.
The grace to be practiced is Reparative love for the Sacred Heart, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice interior docility by promptly following grace and rejecting the resistance of pride, impurity, resentment, and self-will.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist the modernist notion that dogma may change its meaning according to the religious needs of an age. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing reparative love for the Sacred Heart when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Allow contradiction and sacrifice to uncover what in you still resists conformity to Jesus Christ. Perform every duty with Mary's faith, recollection, obedience, purity of intention, and charity so that Christ may govern the whole day.

How shall I imitate Christ today?
“We be all frail: but thou shalt judge no man more frail than thyself.”
Catholic judgment rejects error without forgetting one's own need of mercy. Let vigilance begin with the disorder nearest at hand: your own.
You need not call falsehood harmless in order to be humble. Humility simply refuses to use another person's fault as shelter from repentance. Condemn what God condemns, pray for the soul in danger, and then ask whether the same root - pride, fear, sensuality, or human respect - has found a quieter form in you.

When another's fault irritates you, pray for that soul and examine the same root in yourself.
Before Night Falls
Return the completed day to God.
Give thanks before measuring the day by feeling or visible success. Ask light to see faults without discouragement, make an Act of Contrition, forgive injuries, and place tomorrow beneath divine Providence.
Examine which dispositions resembled Mary and which resisted the Holy Ghost's work of forming Christ in you.

Walk faithfully. Pray attentively. Bear your cross willingly. Love God above all things.

You do not walk alone: remain beside the Blessed Virgin as she leads you toward her Divine Son and the Heavenly Jerusalem.
