The month of Mary should not pass in affection alone. Place yourself under her mantle and learn her humility, purity, recollection, and obedience, so that she may form Christ more perfectly in you.
Intention
For growth in true devotion to Our Lady, the protection of innocence, and the return of wandering souls to her Divine Son.
A faithful act
Offer the Rosary, or a carefully prayed decade when the full Rosary is not possible, for souls in danger of losing the Faith.

Thursday remembrance
The Most Blessed Sacrament
Thursday recalls the institution of the Holy Eucharist and the priesthood at the Last Supper. Adore Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and pray for priests, through whose consecrated ministry the Holy Sacrifice is offered.
Intention
For holy priests, worthy Communions, vocations, and reparation for neglect and sacrilege toward the Blessed Sacrament.
A faithful act
Make a visit or spiritual Communion and pray especially for priests by name.
Prayer
Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament, increase our faith, receive our reparation, and sanctify Thy priests.

At Aquila, in Abruzzo, St. Bernardine of Siena, of the Order of Minorites, who ennobled Italy by his preaching and example. — At Rome, on the Salarian road, the birthday of St. Basilla, virgin, who was of royal race and betrothed to an illustrious personage. As she refused to marry him, he accused her of being a Christian. The emperor Gallienus gave orders that she should accept him or die by the sword. Answering that she had for her spouse the King of kings, she was transpierced with a sword. — At Mmes, in France, St. Baudelius, martyr. Being arrested, but refusing to sacrifice to idols, and remaining immovable in the faith of Christ, notwithstanding blows and tortures, he gained the palm of martyrdom by a precious death. — At Edessa, in Syria, the holy martyrs Thalalaeus, Asterius, Alexander, and their companions, who suffered under the emperor Numerian. — In Thebais, St. Aquila, martyr to the faith, whose body was torn with iron combs. — At Bourges, in France, St. Austregisil, bishop and confessor. — At Brescia, St. Anastasius, bishop. — At Pavia, St. Theodore, bishop. — At Rome, St. Plautilla, wife of an ex-consul and mother of the blessed Flavia Domitilla. The Octave of Pentecost
The fire of the Holy Ghost kept before the Church.
The privileged Octave of Pentecost prolongs the descent of the Holy Ghost, keeping the Church within the mystery of divine fire, truth, charity, and apostolic courage.
The octave teaches that Pentecost is not enthusiasm. The Spirit of truth strengthens the Church to confess Christ, keep His commandments, and carry doctrine to the nations.
A Catholic should ask for fire, but also for rule. The Holy Ghost does not make the soul vague, proud, or restless; He makes it clean, docile, courageous, and faithful to what Christ has taught.
Virtue to practice
Docility to the Spirit of truth.
Error to resist
The false appeal to the Spirit that excuses novelty, disorder, or disobedience to Christ's doctrine.
For the pilgrim in exile
Stay inside Pentecost. The exile needs fire, but it must be the fire of truth and charity, not the fever of novelty.
Imitate today
- Invoke the Holy Ghost before work and prayer.
- Choose truth over human respect.
- Ask for charity that strengthens obedience.
- Reject every impulse that disguises self-will as zeal.

“In the Name of Jesus, that Name which he ever bore upon his lips and in his heart.”
Doctrine taught
- The Breviary shows St. Bernardine as formed by devotion to the Blessed Virgin, charity to the sick, service in plague, hidden prayer, and Franciscan humility.
- When he was commanded to preach, God freed him from the hindrance of his voice, and he became a reforming preacher in an Italy wounded by vice, crime, and civil wars.
- His preaching of the Holy Name of Jesus restored peace, corrected morals, and drew cities back from disorder toward penance and Christian life.
For the pilgrim in exile
Set the Name of Jesus against confusion. St. Bernardine teaches that public renewal begins with penance, mercy to the suffering, and fearless preaching of Christ's Holy Name.

What Our Lord teaches

- The Holy Name is not a slogan for influence. It must be preached with reverence, penance, and love for the souls who hear it.

The religious speech that seeks influence without conversion of life.

Ask St. Bernardine for a burning lamp, not merely a loud voice. Holy speech should leave the soul nearer to God.

Meditation
The Church Made Public
At Pentecost the Holy Ghost strengthened the apostles to preach Christ publicly and carry the Gospel to the nations. His work is not private excitement separated from doctrine, worship, and the authority Christ established. The faithful should ask Him for zeal that makes them more obedient to revealed truth, more constant in charity, and more courageous in Catholic witness.
